OPEN the 20th edition of the legendary Chinese International Performance Art Festival will be held in 2019 for the first time outside China - in parts of Europe. As part of this festival on tour, the symposium will reflect on current practice and offer new impulses for Chinese and local performance artists.

In 2000, the curators Chen Jin, Shu Yang and Zhu Ming founded OPEN with the aim of presenting excellent international performance artists and entering into an exchange with the Chinese public. So far, the festival has been held 19 times. Many of the previous participants participated in the spirit of independence, openness and freedom of expression. As a cultural platform, the festival has become one of the most important addresses among international performance artists.

Chen Jin and his partner Hu Yifei will present the history and intentions of OPEN at a small symposium. In this context, they will report on provocation and censorship (the festival was broken off several times and artists arrested), the network, its protagonists, as well as common qualities of international performance art.
